Silver jewelry apart from the silver contains admixture of copper. The metals darken over time and tend to lose original attractiveness. Nevertheless, there are several tips that can help return your silver jewelry to its pristine beauty. Well, here they are!
Preventive Care and Maintenance
To avoid tarnish, corrosion or black coating on jewelry, it should be protected from household chemicals, perspiration, rubber, chlorinated water, or any substances, which contain sulfur. Thus, it is better to do household chores without wearing jewelry. Among other “enemies” of silver are cosmetics, lotions, perfumes, hair spray, and hair products.
After removing jewelry, they should be wiped with a soft cloth, and then put into a polyethylene bag; the bag should not contain any air.
These procedures are necessary as silver is very sensitive metal and it can react even at air. Besides, each jewelry should be stored separately in a cool, dark, and dry place. If humidity is high, then a piece of silica gel should be put into the bag.
Cleaning at home
Jewelry and accessories made of silver should be cleaned at least once a month by being wiped with a flannel. It is highly advised not to use for cleaning rough sponges, brushes, detergents, and sand. For the cleaning, you can use the following mixtures, baking soda diluted with water to a paste state, dentifrice, 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, and 6% vinegar solution. However, if you are not sure about the exact composition of jewelry or accessories made of silver, it is better to refer professionals.
